Sodium recovery from normal and edematous lungs studied by indicator dilution curves.

چکیده
We attempted to measure sodium and water spaces in the lungs before and after pulmonary edema produced in dogs by increasing pulmonary capillary pressure or by alloxan. We employed a technique depending on the difference in transit times through the lungs of tritiated water or Na, with reference to an intravascular indicator. In the control measurements, there was virtually complete recovery of the sodium indicator, but in pulmonary edema there was a significant loss. It is possible that this represents distribution of some of the Na into an extra vascular volume with an exit other than the pulmonary veins, but we would expect this to be accompanied by an equivalent amount of tritiated water. Since there was complete recovery of tritiated water in pulmonary edema, it seems more likely that the sodium loss represents binding by some extravascular locus and may be related to the extent of alveolar wall injury. Detection of changes in lung tissue properties with multiple-indicator dilution.
We evaluated the potential utility of a group of indicators, each of which targets a particular tissue property, as indicators in the multiple-indicator dilution method to detect and to identify abnormalities in lung tissue properties resulting from lung injury models. We measured the pulmonary venous outflow concentration vs. time curves of [14C]diazepam, 3HOH, [14C]phenylethylamine, and a vas...
متن کاملComponents of the "central" blood volume in the dog.
The indicator-dilution method was used in the dog in an attempt to define the proportion of the "central" blood volume contained in the lung vessels. When injections were made into the pulmonary artery with sampling from the femoral artery only half or even less of the calculated blood volume could be accounted for by the lungs. When ;i venous injection site was used, the proportion in the lung...
متن کاملComment on Borges et al. "regional lung perfusion estimated by electrical impedance tomography in a piglet model of lung collapse".
TO THE EDITOR: The paper by Borges et al. (1) presents an excellent experimental study comparing two approaches for the evaluation of regional pulmonary perfusion by electrical impedance tomography (EIT) with single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) as well established reference method. The negative results on the pulsatility approach confirm the skepticism addressed by recently p...
متن کاملThe Use of Ascorbate Dilution Curves
AT THE PRESENT time, indicator-dilution curves are one of the most important technics employed in the investigation of the circulation. The earliest of these studies were carried out by the rapid serial collections of blood samples and their subsequent photometric analysis.' This ingenious but cumbersome method was replaced by the continuous withdrawal of blood in front of a photoelectric cell,...
متن کاملSingle-passage extraction and permeability estimation of sodium in normal dogs lungs.
Bolus injections of 24NaCl, 131I-albumin, and indocyanine green dye were made into the right atria of anesthetized, ventilated dogs. Blood was sampled from the femoral artery, and from the dilution curves, instantaneous extractions, E2(t), and area averaged extractions, E3(t), were calculated for sodium at various plasma flows (Fp). Flow reduction was produced by transient inferior vena cava ob...
